Contacting Lake Haven

Please do not contact us about your current pets that are unwanted.  Lake Haven is a rescue for homeless or orphaned animals only.  Current pets are the responsibility of their owners.  Pet ownership is a lifetime commitment.

If you must find a new home for your current pet, see the self-adoption tips to the right.

Self-Adoption Tips

If you must find a new home for your pet, do so by placing an advertisement in your local paper.

DO NOT list the pet for free, as research dealers look for free pet advertisements as a way to easily obtain pets and sell them to research facilities for a profit.

Assure the pet gets placed in a home that is like their original home.  For example, if the animal is used to a fenced-in yard, try to find a home with a fenced-in yard.  If the pet is a dog that lives in the country, make sure not to adopt it out to apartment dwellers.

To ensure the animal gets a good home, feel free to use our adoption application to judge good pet ownership traits.

Trade contact information with the new owners so you can check on how the pet is doing.

Make an agreement with the new owners that if the adoption does not work out, they are to return the animal to your care.

Found Animals

A found animal should be brought to a shelter in the county in which it is found.

However, two questions you need to ask before dropping any animal at a shelter:

1.  Do you sell your animals to research?

2.  What method do you use to euthanize animals should they have to be put down?  The most humane way is sodium pentothal injections, rather than gassing animals or other forms of euthanasia.
